Solar Power Plants utilise sunlight to generate electricity. A typical solar power plant consists of an array of Photovoltaic Panels and a corresponding inverter. In case we intend to store the power to utilise it later batteries can also be integrated into the solar system. Solar plants can be as small as few watts to as big as multi-megawatts
Solar Power Plants can be divided into three types:
• Grid Tied Solar Power Plant
• Off Grid Solar Power Plant
• Hybrid Solar Power Plant
As the name suggests, the solar power plant that is connected to the grid or main electricity supply system is called gird tied plant. The energy produced by the solar plant is utilised by the owner of the plant and the excess is fed into the gird. This is facilitated by a system called Net Metering System. The system can operate as long as there is electricity in the grid. In case of power failure, the system will also stop working. This type of the system is ideal in places with minimum power cuts as it leads to maximum savings in electricity bills.
Also known as standalone power plants these solar plants essentially are utilised along with battery bank or generator back up. These plants produce energy that is either stored in batteries to be used later on or used in conjunction with generators. These plants are inherently expensive as they must have battery bank or a generator. These are however ideal in the remote areas with no power or areas with frequent power cuts.
